2022-23 Substitute Licensed Practical Nurse

Rate: $20 per Hour 

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position will involve substituting as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in various schools within the district. The LPN will be available for following through on Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) during emergency situations with students. This may include, but not be limited to administration of emergency medications. In addition, the LPN may be involved in non-emergency IHP procedures such as, but not limited to, blood glucose monitoring, catheterization or breathing treatments. The LPN will work as a team with the district RNs, teachers, specialists, administration and families. The LPN will perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures. The LPN will work under the supervision of a district RN and has a limited scope of practice. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

 

LPNs assigned to a student or students in a classroom setting will be required to fulfill the job duties of a paraeducator while remaining medically vigilant of the student(s) under their care.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Licensed Practical Nurse licensure.
  2. Current Health Care Provider certification.
  3. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  4. AA degree or equivalent (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours of college level credits OR passing score on ETS paraeducator test.)
  5. Must present transcripts of highest level of education within thirty (30) days of hire.
  6. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  7. Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
  8. Must pass basic skills test.
  9. Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within thirty (30) days of hire and yearly thereafter.
  10. Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
  11. CPI training must be obtained at the next available opportunity, if required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  1. Demonstrated successful ability in dealing with medical emergencies.
  2. Value the confidential nature of student information as well as HIPAA/FERPA.
  3. Positive evaluations and recommendations
  4. Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  5. Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  6. Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  7. Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
  8. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
  9. Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
  10. Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
  11. Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

 

  1. Successful experience working with students with medical needs.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively and work with a variety of people.
  3. Ability to follow directions in a team situation.
  4. Ability to work team effectively with school staff, and maintain supportive relationships with teachers, RNs, and administration.
  5. Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.
  6. Successful in passing the districts administered Basic Skills Test.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Address medical needs on a daily basis under the supervision of the RN.
  2. Administer diastat to students according to student’s Individual Healthcare Plan.
  3. Assist paraeducators and teachers with learning activities as part of the classroom team.
