Description

You must complete two steps in order to be hired as an emergency substitute teacher:

 

Step One 

  1. Apply for the emergency substitute teacher opening with Kennewick School District (ksd.org)
  2. Must have a Bachelor’s degree (transcripts need to be attached with bachelor’s degree posted).
  3. Experience working with children/teens (volunteering in schools, coaching, teaching Sunday school, etc.)
  4. Please have at least two supervisor references with e-mail contact information included in your application online.
  5. Create an E-Cert Profile at OSPI http:/www.k12.wa.us/certification

Step Two – can be done concurrently with Step 1 

    1. The Emergency Sub Teacher Certificate is issued through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)http:/www.k12.wa.us/certification  Follow the instructions below (First-Time Application for Emergency Sub Teachers) to complete the application process with OSPI.
    2. Within the Emergency Sub Certificate application, there is form- “District Request for Emergency Substitute Certificate.”  KSD cannot add a request until applicant has been cleared to be hired as an emergency sub teacher by the KSD HR Department pending an interview with Certificated Sub Coordinator Margie Hutchings.

  • “Emergency Substitute Certification”
  • “E-Certification Login”
  • “Create an Account” – if you don’t have one already set-up
  • Complete an E-Cert profile online, please make sure to enter your SS number in your profile.
  • District will request you be issued an emergency sub certificate once you are interviewed and we have decided to pursue hiring you as an emergency sub teacher.
  • Then you will claim your District Recommendation on your E-Cert home page, pay for your certification, and complete your application with OSPI.
  • Contact OSPI Help Line (360) 725-6400 if you have questions with E-Cert profile or OSPI E-Cert application process.

 

Emergency sub teachers may only work when the KSD sub pool is depleted of all certificated sub teachers (sub teachers with a certificated teaching degree).

JOB DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position will involve working as a substitute/on-call teacher to assist schools on a program need basis. The positions will be varied, and may include instruction with basic education and disabled students in self-contained and regular education settings, recess and/or crosswalk duty, providing clerical assistance, and performing other job-related duties as assigned. All duties of the position will be performed within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

1. Bachelors Degree or higher

2. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

3. Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.

4. Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.

5. Positive recommendations/references from previous supervisors.  Family and friend will not be considered acceptable references.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

1. Must be able and available to work Monday-Friday, hours vary depending on assignment - exceptions will be considered.Earliest assignment at 6:30 a.m. - 3:40 p.m.  Must be able to work at various locations as needed.

2. Must be able to work in any classroom, including all special services classrooms.

3. Willing to supervise the care of disabled children, including toileting and other needed responsibilities.

4. Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.

5. Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

6. Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.

7. Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.

8. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.

9. Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement

10. Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.

11. Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.

12. Must be willing to become first-aid certified if required.

13. Must have and maintain evidence of positive evaluations, excellent attendance and punctuality, evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

 

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

 

1. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to cope with unpredictability; be flexible, diplomatic and cooperative; follow the teacher’s directions; model appropriate behavior; demonstrate patience, enthusiasm and a positive attitude toward working with students with disabling conditions; maintain composure in difficult situations.

2. Employee must value and maintain the confidential nature of sensitive student information

3. Successful experience working with school-aged children.

4. Successful experience at recess duty desirable.

5. Demonstrated clerical skills, training and/or experience in using computers and other technology applications.

6. Ability to be flexible with the varied demands of the position.

7. Ability to communicate effectively and work with a variety of people.

8. Ability to follow directions.

9. Willingness to work with all children within the school regardless of abilities.

10. Willingness to support and promote the curriculum and to maintain a warm and friendly relationship with those teachers.

Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm.

 

Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 26 lbs; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F +. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.

 

Application Procedure: In-District staff must complete an internal online application by 10:00 p.m. (PST) on or before the closing date. In-building/In-district staff will have eight school days, or eight working days during the summer to apply for a vacant position through the online application system. The employee may choose but will not be required to meet with the building administrator to understand the building practices, procedures and initiatives specific to the position to which they are applying. After eight days if an in-building employee is qualified for the position, the principal will offer the employee the position. In the case that more than one in-building employee is interested in a position, the position will be offered to the qualified and senior employee. If a position is not filled in-building after the eight day period, the position will be offered to the qualified, most senior in-district applicant, if any. Teachers with a summative evaluation score of 1 or 2 are not eligible to transfer unless agreed upon by the District and Association.

 

Out-of-District applicants must complete the online District application and attach a letter of interest, resume, valid Washington state teaching credential, and copies of transcripts with degree posted. All hires are subject to completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
